It would not be starring a mostly black cast and directed by Ryan Coogler, 31, also black, whose activist stance can be seen in his small but relevant filmography, such as Fruitvale Station: The Last Stand (2014).
For the saga of King T'Challa, a character created in the 60s by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby who never passed the second tier in the comics, it took 18 films released in ten years of Marvel activity. Until arriving at the Black Panther, the scenario was carefully designed and validated by the success of recent films of black thematic, like Run!, Selma, Moonlight: Under the Light of the Moonlight and I Am Not Its Black. The production also joined the powerful rapper Kendrick Lamar, 30, who produced the track.
It was all so studied that actor Chadwick Boseman (T'Challa/Black Panther), 41, a descendant of slaves from South Carolina, made a point of forging an African accent to mark the distance of his character from Eurocentric culture. "If I used a European accent, it would be convenient with the white supremacist idea. The idea of a black king who becomes a vigilante, divided between his people and the world, repositions all forms of representation of the African people in the entertainment industry, putting it in a place previously vetoed by us, blacks", says the protagonist of Get on Up: The Story of James Brown (2015).
More than an ethnic reeducation, Black Panther represented for him a multiple process of cultural learning: "We studied African dances, tribal fights with spear, shield and capoeira. And with each manifestation, came a whole history about what each activity of that represents for the African culture.
The plot follows T'Challa, after Captain America: Civil War (2016), to Wakanda, a country that represents an Africa never seen, that mixes tradition and cutting-edge technology. It is Marvel's first film before the expected Avengers: Infinite War, which will be released in April.
A black superhero, a cast led by young people (Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya) and legendary (Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker) African-American figures, two screenwriters and a director (the talented Ryan Coogler) Of that origin... There is no doubt that Black Panther is the overproduction that Hollywood was needing in these times of scarce racial diversity.
Beyond the fact that in the United States the values of this new production of Marvel have been too exalted for reasons that exceed their artistic findings, it should be noted that Black Panther is, fortunately, much more than just a reassuring film for the prophets of Political correctness At age 31, the director of Fruitvale Station and Creed: Heart of champion (also co-writer of the film) knows how to build a tradition (the story starts with an oral story that is transmitted from generation to generation), an unknown universe but at the same credible time (the African nation of Wakanda) with a sophisticated technological development from a powerful metal known as vibranium.
The film jumps in time and oscillates between different places (from Oakland to London, from Vienna to Busan and, of course, back to the mountains and plains of Wakanda that include via visual effects funds shot in the Iguazu Falls) to narrate the assumption - after some violent duels - of T'Challa or Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) as king of the tribe, the subsequent internal and external threats, and the dilemmas between remaining as a community isolated from the rest of the world or integrating, resorting to diplomacy and adopt a more solidarity stance.
Black Panther has a little bit of everything (aerial, terrestrial and aquatic action scenes, hand-to-hand combat, family drama, some touches of humor that break some solemnity, a romantic streak and strong female characters in every sense, while addressing generational differences and the contradictions between tradition and modernity, it is not the extraordinary or much less revolutionary film that especially in the United States today, but it is a film solid and entertaining that arrives at the right place and at the right time.
Note: It should be noted that - despite its welcome commitment to change - Black Panther has the customary cameo of patriarch Stan Lee and two valuable scenes that appear during and after the final credits. There are things that Marvel is not willing to give up.
The tribal question, present throughout the film, transforms it into the best exponent of a genre that is revived following the footsteps of the seminal Shaft or Foxy Brown. The director Ryan Coogler achieves that the film is more than the typical story of superheroes, even, leaving the "Marvel formula", with a plot of espionage and intrigue and with more social content without renouncing the melee battles, neither of the vertigo, nor of the extravagant special effects (although, bad of this era of the digital effects, at times the CGI is abused).
The cast with Chadwick Boseman in the lead looks and is chosen to perfection. A dream team of African-American actors that includes an eccentric Forrest Withaker, the attractive villain that composes Michael B. Jordan, and several actresses (Lupita Nyong'o, Darai Gurira, Leticia Wright) who compose female characters with much more personality and weight of that usually have in this type of feature films. All complies fully, excelling in both physical sequences and dialogues, scenes that range from the tragic, through moments of romance, political conflicts and of course, humor ... black, of course.
Verdict:
We rarely give 5 over 5 stars to superhero movies after the Dark Knight, but Black Panther just exceeded to our expectations. It should be the best superhero movie of the year. You should really watch it.
